Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation

A hub for urban science and research, the University of Chicago’s Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation is training the next generation of urban scholars. With over half the global population now living in cities, urban areas are—and will be—at the forefront of addressing the modern challenges of climate change, inequity, and sustainability. The institute is developing new ways of thinking and acting that embrace the complexity of urban societies, integrate diverse disciplines, and make use of the enormous amounts of data generated by urban spaces.

To commemorate the institute’s first five years, a retrospective catalogue was commissioned. It tells the story of how urban innovation as a discipline began over a century ago at the University of Chicago, and chronicles how the work continues today with an even greater focus through the institute’s recent achievements and ongoing endeavors.
